1. The Ten Commandments or Decalogue  

 

First three commandments refer to God

to loving and serving God

Last seven refer to our neighbor

These ten summarize the Mosaic Law

Part 3 of the Catechism explains the meaning     

of the ten commandments in great detail

 

2. First Commandment   

 

You shall have no other Gods 

Only Yahweh is to be worshiped

We show faith by believing in God

We have hope in his mercy

We love God as worthy of our love

We worship and pray to God

We belong to the true religion

 

3. Sins Against First Commandment

 

Atheists – deny the existence of God

Agnostics - claim that we cannot know

whether or not God exists

Heresy - denial of a truth of faith

Apostasy – denial of Christ and the Church

Schism – denial of the authority of the Church

Superstition,  astrology, idolatry,

fortune telling, magic, sacrilege

We venerate, but do not adore, icons

We venerate, but do not adore,

Mary and the saints 

Some people worship money, fame, etc.,

as their God

 

4. Second Commandment    

 

Do not take the name of the Lord in vain

We must fulfill vows in the name of God

Forbidden are perjury and blasphemy, as well as      

hateful words spoken against God

also cursing and disrespect for God

blaming God for our troubles

 

5. Third Commandment    

 

Keep holy the Sabbath day

Obligation to go to Mass

Avoid unnecessary work

Relax, read, be with the family

Do charitable work for others
