1. Morality     

 

Ten Commandments plus the two great ones

Purpose - we are made to know, love

       and serve god, and thereby attain salvation

Constant struggle - conscience vs concupiscence

       for living in state of grace

Virtues are channels of grace

Actual graces are aids to live morally

Sin is an offense against God

Mortal sin involves grievous matter with sufficient

     reflection and full consent of the will

 

2. Virtues and Vices     

 

Virtue is a disposition toward good

       toward morally right actions

Vice is a disposition toward evil

       toward morally wrong actions

Conscience battles concupiscence

We will enumerate virtues,

       vices, and related matters

 

3. Cardinal and Theological Virtues  

 

The four cardinal virtues (cardo = hinge) are

Moral virtues  with things as their object

                                  Prudence

                                  Justice

                                  Fortitude

                                  Temperance

 

The three theological virtues have God as their object

                                  Faith

                                  Hope

                                  Love

 

4.  Seven Deadly Sins  

 

Tendencies to sin, with three categories 

       Self centeredness

              1. Pride,  2. Envy,  3. Anger

       Sensuality

              4. Gluttony,  5. Lust, 6. Sloth

       avarice

              7. Covetousness

 

5.  Beatitudes

 

These come from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount,

       Chap. 5 of Matthew’s gospel 

1. Blessed are the poor in spirit 

      For theirs is the kingdom of God

2. Blessed are those who mourn

      for they shall be comforted

3. Blessed are the meek

      for they shall inherit the earth

4. Blessed are those who crave justice

      for they shall be satisfied

5. Blessed are the merciful

      for they shall obtain mercy

6. Blessed are the pure in heart

      for they shall see God

7.  Blessed are the peace makers

      they shall be called the sons of God

8.  Blessed are the persecuted

      for theirs is kingdom of heaven 

 

 6. Decalogue

 

  The Old Testament has two versions: Exodus  20:2-17

         and Deuteronomy 5:6-22.

  1. Thou shalt not worship false Gods 

  2. Thou shalt not take name of God in vain

  3. Keep holy the Sabbath day

  4. Honor thy father and thy mother

  5. Thou shalt not kill 

  6. Thou shalt not commit adultery

  7. Thou shalt not steal 

  8. Thou shalt not bear false witness

  9. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife  

10. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's goods

 

 7.  Precepts of the Church    

 

1.  Attend Mass on Sundays and holy days

2.  Avoid unneeded work on these days

3.  Easter duty - receive Holy Communion at Easter time

      go to confession at least once a year

4.  Observe the marriage laws

5.  Strengthen and support the Church

6.  Do penance at appointed times  (e.g. during Lent)
